Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A high-ranking representative said the attack rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
