Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
