Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
