No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
